Busting Student Eval Myths?

Busting Student Eval Myths?
Study attempts to debunk criticisms of student evaluations of teaching as reliable measures of teaching effectiveness, but critics remain.

Student evaluations of teaching, or SETs, can provide a better understanding of what is working and what isn’t in classrooms. But gaining a “meaningful” understanding necessitates separating the “myths and realities” surrounding these evaluations, says a new report on the topic. That, in turn, requires data -- lots of data.

The Art of the Skip Level Meeting

The Art of the Skip Level Meeting
By Scott Boulton

One of the more effective tools that manager can employ is the use of a skip level meeting. Simply put, a skip level meeting is one where a manager’s manager meets with employees to discuss department concerns, obstacles, opportunities for improvement, etc. with a focus on maintaining and/or improving overall communication. For example, let’s say you have a Manager of Customer Service with 12 direct reports and this manager reports to a Director of Operations. A skip level would involve the Director of Operations meeting with the 12 direct reports of the Manager of Customer Service, without the Manager of Customer Service being present, in effect, “skipping” a level over them.

Is an M.B.A. Still Worth It?

Why Your Meetings Stink—and What to Do About It
Steven G. Rogelberg

Dave, a senior VP at a large U.S. bank, was a strong one-on-one manager. However, 360-degree feedback revealed that he struggled in one critical area: leading effective meetings. Multiple employees described his meetings as “a time suck.” They complained that he asked them to meet too often, allowed a few people to dominate conversations, and failed to create an environment where attendees really wrestled with ideas and engaged in critical thinking. These comments took Dave by complete surprise. He’d thought he was doing a good job with meetings—better than most of his peers, anyway.

Hopkins Universal Design for Learning Initiative

The Hopkins Universal Design for Learning Initiative (HUDL Initiative), seeks to support the use of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in face to face and online courses across the university. UDL provides an opportunity for the Hopkins community to think about teaching and learning methodologies that accommodate and provide opportunities for success for all learners, not just those who request an accommodation. As the JHU learning community grows, the potential for learning variability grows as well. UDL can help JHU’s leadership in dynamic and meaningful learning.
